The Rock runs Bury's switch-on and has published nothing for 2026. Last year's parade was Saturday 8 November at 3.45pm, free, from the side of Barclays.
Bury’s Christmas lights switch-on is not a council event. It is run by The Rock, and as of 3 October the centre has still published nothing at all about 2026. That is the honest answer to the question most people are searching for, and the rest of this page is what we can tell you while we wait.
Where the 2026 date will appear
The Rock announces its switch-on on its own site, usually about ten weeks ahead. In 2025 the call for parade groups went up in the summer and the event ran on 8 November, so an announcement in September or early October 2026 would be normal.
Two places to watch:
- therockbury.com/news, where the most recent story, on 3 October, was an environmental award from 8 September, with nothing on Christmas.
- therockbury.com/whats-on, which on 3 October listed cinema offers, a running club and a pet food bank, but no switch-on.
Bury Council will not announce it. Its newsroom carries 96 stories tagged Christmas and they are almost all about bin collection changes, not events. Our own bin collection days page covers those when they are published.
What happened in 2025, in detail
2025 was the first year The Rock ran a parade as well as a switch-on, to close its 15th birthday year. From the centre’s own announcement:
- Date: Saturday 8 November 2025.
- Time: the parade started at 3.45pm.
- Meeting point: the side of Barclays, at The Rock.
- Cost: free.
Local radio station Roch Valley Radio, which broadcast live from it, reported that hundreds of families turned out. The parade was community-led: Radcliffe Rainbows, 44th Bury Scouts, Seedfield Panthers FC, Bury Music Service, Holy Cross College and the council’s fostering and adoption teams all walked in it, alongside stilt-walking angels, a Christmas pudding and roaming disco balls. The parade moved through the centre and the crowd gathered at St John’s Square for the countdown, which revealed new decorations including a geometric stag, a reindeer sleigh and a modern Christmas tree, plus lighting on the leisure block, the lamp posts and the pillars.
Groups that took part were entered for parade awards in three categories, best dressed group, most original Christmas theme and best use of lights, and the prize for winning included priority placement in the following year’s parade. If your school, club or choir wants in for 2026, that is the invitation to watch for: in 2025 you registered by emailing the centre with your group name, numbers and why you wanted to take part.
The rest of the borough
There is no separate Bury Council switch-on for Ramsbottom, Radcliffe, Whitefield, Prestwich or Tottington, and none of the six towns has a 2026 switch-on on the record. What Ramsbottom does have is a festive season built out of markets and fairs, and its events calendar is up to date. Confirmed there for this year:
- Bleakholt Christmas Fair, Ramsbottom Civic Hall, Saturday 14 November, 10am to 3pm.
- Christmas Makers Market, Ramsbottom Civic Hall, Sunday 29 November, 11am to 4pm.
- Ramsbottom Rotary Santa visits, running from 27 November to 24 December.
- So Retro, Ramsbottom Civic Hall, Saturday 7 November, the same day as the town’s bonfire.
One warning if you go looking for the old Ramsbottom Christmas market yourself. The domain ramsbottommarkets.co.uk has lapsed and now serves an unrelated gambling site, so ignore anything that still links to it. The live calendar is visitramsbottom.co.uk.
Getting into town on the night
The switch-on is on a Saturday afternoon in a shopping centre, which means the car parks fill from lunchtime, not from 5pm. The Rock’s own car park went cashless on 7 September 2026, so bring a card or the app. Council tariffs for every town centre car park are on our parking in Bury page, and anything closed or diverted that weekend will appear on our roadworks and travel page. Metrolink runs late into Bury Interchange; times are on our tram times page.
What we will update, and when
This page gets its 2026 details the day The Rock publishes them. Expect the date first, the parade registration call at the same time, and the running order about a fortnight before. If you want the whole festive season rather than one night, our things to do in Bury page has what is open and what it costs.
Frequently asked questions
When is the Bury Christmas lights switch-on 2026? Not announced. The Rock, which runs it, had published nothing about 2026 when we checked on 3 October. The 2025 event was Saturday 8 November.
Who organises it? The Rock shopping centre, not Bury Council. The council’s newsroom publishes nothing about switch-on events.
Is it free? Yes. The 2025 parade and switch-on were free to attend.
Where does the switch-on happen? Inside The Rock, at St John’s Square, at the end of a parade that starts by Barclays.
Can my group take part in the parade? In 2025 local schools, clubs and community groups registered by emailing the centre with their group name, numbers and reason for taking part. Watch for the same call this year.
