Peel Way and Rochdale Old Road are shut overnight for five weeks from 27 July, and an M66 slip road closes on 17 August. Plus the live map and the routes that matter.

Bury Council does not publish its own live roadworks list. It points residents at the Greater Manchester map, and then keeps a short page of the town centre closures big enough to need explaining. Both are linked below, and this page pulls together what is actually shut right now, what is coming, and the routes that decide whether your journey works.

Where to check first

  • Greater Manchester roadworks map is the live one. It shows every set of works in the borough, who is carrying them out, how long they are expected to last and the likely delay. It covers utility works, which are the ones that appear overnight with no warning.
  • Bury Council road works and closures carries the town centre closures with their diversion routes written out.
  • National Highways handles the M66, M60 and M62. The council has nothing to do with those, and its page will not list them.

What is closed now

Peel Way, overnight

Peel Way is closed 8pm to 6am from Monday 27 July for five weeks, taking it to around 31 August. The work runs from Jubilee Way to a point 50 metres east of Harvard Road. The signed diversion is Jubilee Way, Angouleme Way, Rochdale Road and Derby Way, and the same in reverse.

Rochdale Old Road, overnight

Rochdale Old Road is closed 8pm to 6am on the same five-week programme from 27 July, between its junctions with Chesham Fold Road and Martin Street. The diversion is long: Bell Lane, Derby Way, Rochdale Road, Bury New Road, Bury Street, Bridge Street, Dawson Street eastbound or Market Street westbound, York Street, Queen’s Park Road and Bury and Rochdale Old Road.

Both roads are on the council’s current resurfacing list for 2026/27, which is why they are closed at night rather than dug up in the day.

Market Street and the Fishpool and Pimhole scheme

Market Street has been closed in phases through 2026 for the £5.7m Fishpool and Pimhole Bee Active Travel Scheme, a set of twelve projects the council says will be finished by winter 2026. This is the second closure of the same road in two years, and the council has published its reasoning: the 2025 closure was for £500,000 of safety-critical bridge repairs that could not wait, and the two jobs could not be combined because safe access had to be kept to Bury College and Holy Cross College, which have more than 8,000 students between them on that campus. Market Street will be resurfaced when the scheme finishes.

Because the closures move along the road in phases, check the council’s Market Street page for which section is shut before you plan around it. Access to Market Street premises is via Angouleme Way.

The motorways

M66 junction 2. The southbound entry slip road between junctions 2 and 3 is closed overnight, 9pm to 6am, on 17 August 2026 for bridge joint repairs. One night, but it is the Whitefield and Pilsworth on-slip, so plan the late run home.

A56 at Haslingden. The slip road on the approach to the Haslingden Tesco roundabout is closed 24 hours a day from 27 July to 30 August for United Utilities junction improvements. This is north of Ramsbottom, on the main road up the valley towards Rossendale, and it is the one Ramsbottom and Holcombe Brook drivers will notice.

M62 junctions 20 to 21. Lane three of three is closed in both directions near Rochdale for Broad Lane bridge works, running to November 2026. It does not close the motorway, but it removes a third of the capacity on the stretch Bury traffic joins heading east.

The routes that decide your journey

Bury sits on a small number of roads that carry almost everything, and knowing which one your trip depends on is more useful than any single closure notice.

  • The M66 is the borough’s spine, running from the M60 at Simister up past Whitefield, Bury and Ramsbottom to become the A56 at Edenfield. Junction 2 serves Whitefield and Pilsworth, junction 3 Bury and Radcliffe, junction 4 north Bury. Almost every long journey from the borough starts on it.
  • The A56 is the old route the M66 replaced. It runs through Whitefield as Bury New Road, becomes Peel Way around the town centre, and carries on up the Irwell valley through Ramsbottom. When the M66 is blocked, the A56 is what everyone diverts on to, and it does not have the capacity.
  • The A58 Rochdale Road east and the A58 Bolton Road west are the cross-borough routes, and both funnel into the town centre ring.
  • The M60 at junctions 17 and 18 is where Bury traffic meets the Manchester orbital. Junction 17 is the A56 at Whitefield, junction 18 is the Simister interchange with the M62 and M66. Anything wrong at Simister backs up on to the M66 within minutes.

The alternative to driving

The tram is the answer to most town centre journeys, and the park and rides are free with a valid Metrolink ticket: Radcliffe has 458 spaces, Whitefield 318 and Bury Interchange 96. Full fares and journey times are on the Bury tram times page. If the ring road is shut overnight and you are coming home late, note that trams run from Bury until just after midnight.

For walking and cycling, the £3.2m Milltown Street bridge in Radcliffe opened in May 2026, a 50-metre single span across the River Irwell that replaces the crossing destroyed by Storm Eva on Boxing Day 2015. It sits higher than the old bridge, with no supports in the river, so it should survive the next one.

What is being spent, and where

The borough resurfaces roads on a published annual programme. Bury Council spends around £3.5m a year on resurfacing and £1m a year on preventative maintenance, on the argument that keeping a decent surface alive is cheaper than rebuilding a failed one. A resurfaced road is expected to last up to 20 years.

Underway or about to start in 2026/27: Bannerman Avenue, Green Walks, Hereford Drive and Polefield Grange in Prestwich; Beech Avenue in Whitefield; Leyton Drive, Peel Way and Rochdale Old Road in Bury; Harley Avenue in Radcliffe.

Planned for later in 2026/27: Hampson Mill Lane, Lakeside and Stewart Street in Bury; Prestwich Park Road South, Queens Drive and Rochester Drive in Prestwich; Delph Lane in Radcliffe; George Road, School Lane, Springside Road and Square Street in Ramsbottom; Ganton Avenue and Parr Lane in Whitefield.

Behind that sits the Greater Manchester transport settlement, which has given Bury £17m for highway maintenance to March 2027, of which £4.5m is for the Key Route Network, plus £4.1m for walking and cycling in Bury town centre, £9m in Radcliffe and £2.3m in Ramsbottom. A further £81m is committed to rebuilding Bury Interchange.
