Four of the 11 finalists for best kosher shawarma in the UK are in Prestwich, and Remal is up for best Lebanese. Who they are, and how the vote works.
Five Prestwich food businesses are finalists in the 15th British Kebab Awards. Four of them are in a single category, best kosher shawarma, where Prestwich has more finalists than anywhere else in the country outside London.
The awards named 283 finalists across 22 categories on Wednesday. The organisers say they were picked from almost 500 semi-finalists, after more than 6,000 nominations and over 40,000 public votes. The winners will be announced on 23 February 2027 at the Park Plaza Westminster Bridge in London.
The Prestwich finalists
The full list is on the awards’ finalists page. The awards list the addresses with a Manchester postal town, but all five are in Bury borough.
Best Kosher Shawarma Restaurant and/or Takeaway (11 finalists in the UK):
- JS On the Corner, 27 Bury New Road
- Shefa Mehadrin, 49-53 Bury New Road
- Celia’s Kitchen, 9 Kings Road
- Benny’s Bistro, 47B Bury Old Road
The other seven finalists in that category are in London and in Borehamwood, Hertfordshire.
Best Lebanese Restaurant and/or Takeaway (12 finalists in the UK):
- Remal Restaurant, 501 Bury New Road
Four of the five are in Sedgley ward, at the Manchester end of Prestwich. Remal is in St Mary’s ward.
How the winners are picked
Finalists carry forward the points they built up in the semi-finals, the organisers say. Points come from:
| Source | Points |
|---|---|
| Each public vote | 2 |
| Each endorsement from an MP or councillor | 250 |
| Google rating | 50 per star |
| TripAdvisor rating | 50 per star |
| Food hygiene rating | 50 per point of the rating |
Public voting and endorsements stay open until 11:59pm on Saturday 31 January 2027.
Their food hygiene ratings
Because the hygiene rating counts towards the score, here is where each business stands on the Food Standards Agency register for Bury Council, read on 25 October.
| Business | Rating | Inspected |
|---|---|---|
| Remal Restaurant | 5 | 31 Jan 2025 |
| Celia’s Kitchen | 4 | 17 Sep 2026 |
| Benny’s Bistro | 4 | 15 Sep 2025 |
| Shefa Mehadrin | 3 | 20 Aug 2026 |
| JS On the Corner (listed as “JS”) | 3 | 29 Jul 2026 |
A 3 means hygiene standards are generally satisfactory. Each of these businesses can ask for a re-inspection, and a new rating replaces the old one. Celia’s Kitchen’s September inspection is in our September hygiene roundup.
What it means for you
- You can vote for any finalist on the awards’ finalists page until 31 January. Each vote is worth 2 points.
- A councillor’s endorsement is worth 125 public votes. If you think a local business deserves one, your ward councillors are listed on Bury Council’s website.
- Results come on 23 February. We will report how the Prestwich finalists did.
