All three zeros are takeaways, two of them in Prestwich. The fives include Bury Grammar School, Fairfield General Hospital, the Hollywood Bowl and both Marks & Spencer stores in the borough.

Every rating below is taken from the Food Standards Agency register for Bury Council, which we read on Friday 25 September. Each business name links to its own entry.

Why September looks so good

Treat the recent fives with some care. A business rated 0 to 4 has 21 days to appeal, so the register tends to hold lower ratings back for a few weeks. A rating of 5 can go up straight away.

That is visible here. Of the 15 ratings of 2 or below, 13 were given in August. Only two, both on 1 September, have appeared since. More low ratings from September are likely to surface in October.

Man Sons 10 Manchester Old Road, Bury Takeaway 14 Aug

The register marks a new rating as pending for Man Sons. That usually means the business has asked to be inspected again.

Three businesses registered at 5 Bury New Road, Prestwich were all inspected on 20 August. Ta’am was rated 0, and Bono Benito and La Familia were each rated 2. The register does not say how the three share the premises.

A low rating is a judgement on the day of the inspection. Any business can appeal, ask for a re-inspection once it has made the improvements, or publish its own response on its register entry. If any business named here wants to tell us what it has done since, we will add it.

How Bury compares across the whole register

The register holds 1,221 food businesses in Bury borough. Of the 1,093 with a rating, 800 are rated 5, about 73%. Another 127 are awaiting their first inspection, usually because they are new.

At the other end, 54 businesses in the borough are rated 2 or below: 29 rated 2, 18 rated 1 and 7 rated 0. That is about one in twenty of those rated.

What it means for you

  • Check before you order. Every business’s current rating is on the FSA register. Showing the sticker in the window is voluntary in England, so a missing sticker tells you nothing.
  • A zero does not mean a business is shut. It means the inspector found problems that need urgent improvement. Serious risks can lead to closure, but the rating alone does not.
  • Eating out this weekend? Our weekend listings cover what is on across the borough.
  • Report a problem to the council. Bury Council’s food safety team handles complaints about hygiene in a food business in the borough.
